There are plenty of people out there doing their best to be the next Tony Robbins or Zig Ziglar. Once you've been to see one of the better public speakers, you'll most likely walk away in amazement of how well they were able to pump you up. It's a lot like when you walk out of a really great movie. Great public speakers can leave you uplifted, motivated, and downright excited about the future.
Now compare that picture with the last time you had to attend a sales conference or some other work-related meeting where someone gave a presentation. Chances are you'd never describe that situation as motivating or exciting. You were probably bored to tears and catching yourself nodding off throughout most of the presentation. When you get down to it, there's really no difference between the guy giving a sales presentation in front of twenty co-workers, and the great motivational speaker up on stage in front of a couple thousand people.
Sure, the very successful public speaker has probably had a lot more practice. Also, when you're speaking to large groups of people for a living, you tend to do all you can to improve your presentation so that you'll be asked to speak again. But it's just as easy for a beginning speaker to put on just as good of a performance as the big dogs. If you have aspirations to become a professional public speaker, there's no reason why you can't quickly learn the skills it will take to succeed.
There are plenty of helpful courses out there to further you along in your public speaking career. Most of these course involve common issues in public speaking such as conquering your fear of speaking in front of large groups, or organizing your material in an effective manner. But once these basic issues are taken care of, most presenters will find themselves no closer to their public speaking goals.
One thing that all speakers have in common is that they use audiovisual equipment to create a more powerful impact during presentations. I don't just mean powerpoint slides here. There are tons of creative things involving microphones and sound, video playbacks, and even interesting usage of lighting to create a unique atmosphere for your presentation and set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd.
One of the things that professional speakers understand, is that the audiovisual element of a presentation can play a huge role in how effective their presentation is. It's not only about putting together a great set of powerpoint slides, or playing a video clip aimed at pumping up the crowd. It's also very important to understand the basics of audiovisual equipment, and how you as a speaker interact with that equipment. Some people don't understand that walking in front of a sound system speaker while holding a microphone can cause a huge problem. It's things like this that can be avoided, resulting in a more professional looking presentation.
As you do what you can to improve your chances at a career in public speaking, keep in mind these often overlooked principles of audiovisual equipment. Knowing them can save you a lot of embarrassment. Not only that, but the more you know, the more comfortable are....and the more comfortable you are, the better your presentation. That means you'll be asked to speak more often. Before you know it, you've found success in the exciting world of public speaking.
