Presentation Skills Training: The Anatomy Of A Boring Presentation

You walk to the podium and look at your audience. All eyes are on you. You smile and say, "I'm John or Joan Doe. Thank you for coming. I'm excited to be here. Tonight, I'm going to tell you about the benefits of doing business with ABC Company."

Your audience is quiet and attentive. You feel confident. You've researched your material. You've rehearsed your talk. You are prepared.

You give a brief history of your company. You click your remote and show some slides. Everything works. Technology is on your side. Your anecdotes go over well. After all, nobody is sleeping. They even chuckle at your jokes.

Most importantly, you go through your presentation without a glitch. You make every point you want to make. People applaud when you finish. And, you know they understand everything because no one asks any questions.

You go home feeling satisfied. There's only one problem. Most people in your audience won't remember a thing you said one hour from now. You reached them with your words. But you did not move them.

I've been there. I've listened to and delivered presentations that people seemed to enjoy. But there's only one real test of an effective presentation. It's action. What actions do people take after you speak?

Do they buy your products or services? Do they become your loyal clients or customers? Do they change the behaviors you want them to change? Now, here's the most important question. How many of them take action? In the presentation I've described, the answer is very few.

This is a cookie cutter presentation. It adheres to a formal model in the corporate world. It is decades old. It's deadly and dead. Most business presenters don't know that. They haul it out of the coffin and try to resuscitate the corpse.

If the above scenario is déjà vu, don't feel bad. You can transform any presentation into a dynamic experience that touches people and moves them to action.

Here are a few tips that will help you stand out as a presenter. Remember that energy sells, and data repels. Your enthusiasm and passion will always make a greater impact on people than facts.

Engage, don't upstage. In other words, don't tell people what you want them to learn. Allow them to discover your insights by doing. Create simple exercises for groups of two or more. People will participate and have fun. They will learn, and they will remember you and your message.

Focus on being interested rather than interesting. You can achieve this by asking lots of questions that engage people's minds. They will be attracted to you because they will feel that you care.

I'll end with a powerful presentation secret. Begin before you begin.

Think of a live theater performance. Actors don't enter the stage and announce that they will begin soon. They are already fully engaged in their characters' lives before they hit the stage. The energy of their inner life draws your eyes to them. You are riveted.

So, before you hit the stage, do this. Think of a victory you enjoyed in your life. It can be anything. An award you won. The birth of a child. The day he or she said yes. Visualize the details of that moment. Awaken your emotions.

Look up. Make a fist like athletes do when they score or win an event. Lift your fist toward the sky; pivot your arm down forcefully at your side. Whisper, "Yes!" intensely. Then, say to yourself, "It's show time!" Walk calmly and confidently toward your podium. Begin.
