Presentation Training Classes: Mucking it Up - Common Presentation Mistakes

Because the purpose of your presentation folder is to bring your presentation to the next level in professionalism and appearance, design is everything. A large mistake can not only be a waste of money but cause you to lose a client. Here are some tips to follow while designing your presentation folder.

Visual interest. If your presentation folder is too ornate or too boring, it is going to hit the wrong note with your potential client. It is hard, initially, to find the middle grounds here and a professional designer would be able to help you implement the perfect level of visual interest for your folder. Use nice patterns and pleasant fonts. Above all, consider your target audience. If you are trying to appeal to an older crowd, you might want to go with soft patters and light, bright morning or fall colors for your folder. For a younger crowd, go for sharp contrasts and a modern appearance.

Business. Though this also falls in line with visual interest, it is a separate matter to address and deserves its own section. Because people are paying for presentation folders and they are using it to present or enhance their hard work, they tend to get carried away with placing information and graphics on the folder. For example, on a presentation folder, there really is no need for your company logo, slogan, name, and contact information right on the front cover. Split things up and keep your customer anxious to see the next page!

Text Overload. The presentation folder is not meant to convey a ton of information, and people tend to forget this. It is a housing unit for your work and information. Do not overload your folder with text, images, and designs. Keep the information to a bare minimum and let the clean, professional appearance speak for itself.

If you have a clean presentation folder that appeals in color and design to your target audience, it can sincerely impress your potential clients or peers. This might mean they have a more open mind to your proposal or open their ears more carefully to what you have to say.

You may want to hire a desktop publisher or designer to mock up some presentation folders for you, just so you have a very good idea of the direction you want to take the printing. First impressions are important and no expense can be spared on the first impression that is your presentation folder, because not only is it introducing your work but it is introducing you!
