Presentations Training Classes - How to Deal With Difficult Audiences

I hope you never have had to experience a difficult audience during your presentations but if you do it’s good to know how to handle it correctly. In this final article in the three part series I will cover two areas - Attention and Hecklers.

Attention
Usually an audience will be respectful to presenters - but only if the presenter is being informative, stimulating, useful or entertaining. If you are not then you will simply lose them. You can however fix this with some simple solutions. Maybe your audience is tired, thirsty, hungry or restless. So give them a break, they will be able to leave their seats and move around. Surprise them with a coffee break or even an early lunch.

Maybe you could ask them about their concerns - ask for feedback. But I would offer caution here as this might not always be suitable. If the audience is not paying attention maybe your presentation is too complicated or weak in its delivery. Remember often as the presenter you may be more interested in the presentation than your audience - don't talk for too long! You could ask them, questions or even create a debate if the situation allows. If you feel that you are losing your audience though and none of the above will help, finish your presentation as soon as you can in a professional manner.

Hecklers
I hope you never have to face this situation when presenting --- usually only politicians and stand-up comedians have to deal with hecklers. They are usually prepared to take on hecklers but as presenters we aren't. So what should you do? Well either smile and ignore them or ask them to shut up or leave.

Summary

In this presentation we have covered Attention - how to keep your audience attentive during your presentation and also Hecklers - how to deal with hecklers.

Action
1. Make a presentation 3 or 4 minutes.
2. Consider the two areas covered in this presentation and also articles 1 & 2 of this series
