Presentation Training Course: Presentation Planning - What Sets You Apart?

How you present is as important as what you present. The proper people combined with effective presentation materials can make you a winner. Not too long ago presentation boards were the norm. Walk in the room with a power point presentation and you could blow away the competition. You were remembered for your cutting edge technology! It is what set you apart. But is this still the case?

No. Power point is a very effective tool but now everyone uses it. What can you do with power point that your competitors can't? Not much. We have reached saturation. So how do you set yourself apart?

Many companies have gone back to that old standard, the presentation board. It seems the lack of a sound and light extravaganza can be beneficial to the selling proposal. It is different! But again, how does this set you apart from your competitors?

An effective presentation needs some element that sets you apart from the field. Something your presentations audience remembers you for. It may be a prop, a leave behind or an extraordinary system that your company developed and uses that is not available to others. Discover what this element is and the effectiveness of your presentation will improve dramatically.

Let me give you an example. I worked with a large commercial construction company in South Florida. We presented on a Concert Hall in Miami Beach. The RFP asked us to show how, in an emergency, ambulance and fire trucks could access the construction site. We used a large aerial photo of the area to show proper routing of emergency services.

The aerial photo was large, about 5' high by 2' wide, and we set it on an easel at the end of the room. Almost immediately our entire presentations audience went the photo to have a look. But what they were interested in was not their project. No! What everyone wanted to see was if their home was shown or if they could see their favorite restaurant. One person and this is a true story, even wanted to know if he could see 'details' of the nude beach from the air!!

The photo generated so much interest that by the time we started our formal presentation we were totally relaxed and knew most of our presentations audience by name. What a great ice breaker the photo had been! And it is what we were remembered for when the selection committee called us back for a second interview.

We had it. Something that set us apart. From that point forward every presentation we made included an aerial photo. It always generated interest and we always offered it as a leave behind.

Did it get us work? I can't say specifically that it did, but it certainly didn't hurt. Our presentations audience always remembered who we were!!

Discover that special element that sets you apart and you may be surprised how effective a tool it can be.
