Presentation Seminar: How to Do a Presentation

Presentations in school are part and parcel of your everyday school life. It is common to see students doing class presentations or in most competitions.

It is imperative that your presentations are unique and interesting, so as to capture the audience's or judges attention. So how do you make your presentation stand out?

Firstly, with the advent of new technology such as Web 2.0 tools, we can use some of these tools to help to make our presentation stand out. These engaging tools are a good change from the traditional PowerPoint’s, and can give you a head-start in winning the judges over.

Secondly, don't bore your audience out. Often enough, many presentations lack engagement because they are too lengthy and lack interactivity. Only put key points in your PowerPoint - you should be the one who does the elaboration, not your slides.

Thirdly, if it's a group presentation, or if you're not a confident speaker, you should rehearse a lot. If it's a solo presentation, you may wish to do it in front of a mirror, or ask your friend to hear you out. Get them to give you constructive comments.

Sometimes, it might help to memories your script. If you really can't do that, then you may wish to use cue cards. However, don't put your entire chunk of text there - more than likely you'd be tempted to just read. Presentations are not about reading; it's about presenting and being able to engage the audience.

If it's a group effort, it might be effective to present the parts that you've done the most work in - that way you can answer the questions and present it more convincingly, since you're the one who's in charge of that segment.

On the day of the presentation, just be confident and relax. Remember to speak loudly and just do your best.
