Speaking in front of an audience is something that almost everyone dreads. It makes people feel very nervous when they've got a hundred sets of eyes focusing on them. This heart-wrenching experience can be made 10 times worse if you are not properly prepared. Here are seven tips to help you memorize a presentation so you will be well prepared and confident in front of your next audience.
Break it Into Pieces
It is difficult, if not impossible to remember a whole presentation in one sitting. The better method is to break it up into sections. For example, let's say you have 8 paragraphs to remember. Take the presentation one paragraph at a time.
Slowly Put it Together
This goes hand in hand with the above tip. As you are taking the presentation one paragraph at a time, slowly begin to add paragraphs. For example, memorize the first paragraph, then the first and second, then the first second and third, and so on until you've mastered the whole presentation.
Recite it Out loud
Instead of reading the presentation over and over in your head, recite it out loud. This will work to reinforce the words and let your brain hear them spoken, as well as read them. Effectively, you are doing twice as much by simply speaking out loud.
Remember the Key Points
In each paragraph of your presentation, there most likely a main point or two you are trying to deliver. Make sure you know exactly what they are for each paragraph. Knowing the key points can really save you if you find yourself at a loss for words. Instead of a blank stare, you can elaborate on the key point of the paragraph and hopefully get back on track.
Give Yourself a Break
It is important not to cram when trying to memorize a presentation. This is ineffective. A better approach would be to take breaks after you memorize a few sections of the presentation. Give your brain an hour or two to process what it has just been fed.
Use a Recorder
Record yourself reciting the presentation into a voice recorder. By doing this, you will be able to listen to it over and over. (Think about how easy it is to remember a pop song). Another good idea is to have the presentation set on repeat as you drift off to sleep.
Use note cards
Keep a few note cards handy when you are making the presentation. They will help you get on track if you forget what you have to say. Don't write your whole presentation on these, but rather a few key points that will serve as reminders.
Summing it Up
It can be difficult to remember a presentation, but these tips can definitely make the process easier and leave our feeling more confident.
