One of the most important skills that any professional can learn is how to communicate. Learning to deliver effective presentations is one way of mastering communication skills. The good news is that anyone can learn and polish effective presentation techniques by adopting good methods that reproduce pleasing results over and over.
How Presentation Skills Affect Careers
One skill that will make a big difference in a person's career is how well she communicates. When considering the traits of the most prolific leaders in business, politics or any other discipline, we can quickly distinguish them from others in the way they communicate. Because of the way in which they relay information, these people are viewed as dynamic, charismatic and highly informed. Thus, learning to deliver a polished presentation that demonstrates expertise and professionalism is one way to cultivate this all-important skill.
Write a Memorable Introduction
A person's ability to introduce himself greatly impacts his success. The same goes for presentations. Asking compelling questions and arousing curiosity are effective ways to generate interest. Within this scope, state the objective of the presentation and address the demographics of the audience. Also, emphasize your skills and experience pertaining to this objective. Once written, rehearse the introduction until it is polished and sounds natural. Never underestimate the importance of an effective introduction.
Use Visual Aids as Much as Possible
Research shows that audiences remember more through visual communication rather than oral communication. Therefore, visual aids play an important role in a presentation. Also, in presentation slides, bullet points are less effective than pictures. In fact, a studies indicate that the use of pictures will much more likely achieve the objective of a presentation than will bullet points.
Rehearsing the Presentation
The importance of rehearsing a presentation cannot be overemphasized. It is an absolute must. Too many presentations are given without rehearsal. Rehearse a presentation aloud at least four times. In addition, anticipate any questions, comments or objections and address them ahead of time. There is no such thing as too much preparation. Quite simply, taking the time to rehearse can turn an average presentation into an excellent one.
Use the Rule of Three
Human beings have a tendency to remember things in groups of three. Thus, an audience most likely will recollect three points from an effective presentation. A clever speaker will determine in advance what these three things will be and emphasize them. It is a good idea to introduce these points during the introduction, address them in detail during the presentation and then emphasize them once again at the conclusion.
Practice Makes Perfect
A person who is serious about her career will volunteer to do as many presentations as possible. There are several advantages to doing this. For starters, delivering presentations is great publicity, and professional relationships can develop from the exposure. Second, most people are afraid of public speaking and tend to admire those who face this fear. And finally, as with anything else, the more presentations that a person does, the more skilled at public speaking he will become. In the end, the skilled public speaker is recognized as a fluent communicator.
